Indiana Courage to Lead Renewal Series:
Transforming Ourselves and Our Workplace from Within

The Indiana Courage to Lead renewal series fosters personal and professional renewal through retreats that offer the time and space for us to slow down and reflect on our life and work.  Come join fellow professionals on the following dates as we take time to reflect upon how we might bring our whole selves to work in a more intentional way and align ourselves with new approaches that invigorate our organizations.  We will engage in reflection, conversation and inspire ourselves with new (and old) thoughts and ideas in a community of fellow leaders and learners.

Time: 8:30 – 12:00 noon

2006-2007 Retreat Series Ends on a Summer High Note

From gathering on rocking chairs on the huge deck to canoeing and singing at the Old Finn Farm, the participants in this Courage To Lead series took yet another opportunity to ground, connect and inspire themselves before their busy summers got in full swing.  The group considered the "Symptoms of Inner Peace" and the importance of "Picking Your Team" while also continuing their tradition of conducting clearness committees and connecting who they are to their greater work as leaders.
Some closing observations from participants:

I've liked the acticities that help us focus on what leadership can be for us...

As we've had opportunities to talk on a different level, you realize school administrators have similar concerns and issues and you don't always share those (at peer meetings).

When I came here...I've been more stressed than I've ever been in my life; but I feel more peaceful...you don't think that spending this small amount of time could have such an effect (but it did).

I think a lot of times leaders will go to a specific leadership workshop and read a certain book, and then all just regurgitate the same stuff to each other.  This took us to another level, where you delve into yourself and pull some things out about yourself...bring out some things you really want to do, and now you have the courage to go out and do it.

February 26, 2007

This Thursday, March 1st through Saturday, March 3rd, we will gather for our Courage to Lead Spring Retreat at the Harrison House on the campus of Ft. Benjamin Harrison State Park in Indianapolis.  Directions and a website map are included below...it is a bit tricky to find...so call me if you get lost.  Please plan to arrive between 5-5:30PM and our retreat dinner will begin at 6PM.  Dress for our time together is casual (jeans are fine).  You will need to bring your CTL notebooks and warm clothes/boots for a walk outdoors.

During our retreat, you will experience a Clearness Committee.  We wish to invite two (2) of our participants to be Focus Persons...these colleagues will share confidentially in a small group setting, a personal or professional problem or question that they are struggling with...Clearness Committee members ask open and authentic questions that will help the Focus Persons clarify their issue (not fix or solve the problem).  From our experience, Clearness Committees are an extraordinary "gift" to both the Focus Person and the Committee members.  Please e-mail Terri (in advance of the retreat) to let me know of your interest in being the Focus Person.  Clearness Committees are an extension of the process we did at our fall retreat....we think you will find the work extremely valuable.

We are looking forward to our time "in retreat" both as individuals and as a "community" of school leaders.  The seeds of Spring are surely under all of the recent snow. ice, rain, and fog. Please feel free to contact Terri if you have questions or need further assistance. See you soon!

Blessings,

Midwest School Leaders Gather to Sharpen Leadership

At a retreat center in southeast Indiana, school leaders from the midwest gathered for a three-day experience called Courage To Lead.  Built upon the intent of Leadership & Renewal Outfitters to "equip people to lead with their hearts," the retreat helped school principals, superintendents and other leaders focus on the inner work of personal leadership development and the outer work of connecting with and inspiring each other.

By participants accounts, the experience was not only a success, but much more than they expected or bargained for in exchange for three of their summer days, providing them a chance to not only prepare for the coming year, but to think about their own careers and leadership opportunities.

This retreat is a pilot in advance of a full-year series for school leaders slated to begin in the fall of 2006.

Stay tuned and check back at this site for current information about the upcoming series.

Courage & Renewal for School Leaders

School leaders often describe Courage & Renewal programs as the most meaningful and encouraging professional development of their careers – with many giving credit to this program for their decision to continue in difficult leadership roles.

Participants report:

  • Developing new networks of support with other school leaders, counteracting the prevailing culture of overwork and isolation.
  • Revitalizing their own leadership in ways that invite the untapped potentials, passions, and talents of their faculty and students.
  • Increased capacity to cultivate the kind of trustworthy relationships required to create a positive school culture in which teachers and students flourish.
